Why become a member?

The Parent-teacher Association a membership organization. Members make it possible for PTA to serve children and youth. A strong membership is essential if PTA is to be a force in decisions involving the welfare and education of children. Membership is open, without discrimination, to anyone who believes in and supports the Mission and Purposes of PTA. And the number one reason you should join the Sherwood Forest PTA is to benefit your child. Here are seven more reasons to join:

1. To better understand the school system. Many parents see PTA as their connection between home and school, keeping them informed of school events and policies. Joining PTA allows them to work more closely with teachers and gives them better insight to activities and workings of the school.

2. To get to know other parents. PTA allows parents to get to know and interact with the parents of their children’s friends. Meeting other parents who are involved in the school helps parents feel more a part of their child’s education.

3. To play a part in decisions that affect children. Joined with a network of more than 6 millions members, parents’ voices are heard concerning issues that affect all children.

4. To be a positive volunteer role model for kids. By joining PTA, parents are showing children that they believe in education and that school is important. It also provides ways for parents and their children to volunteer together.

5. To engage in partnerships with school administration and staff. PTA regularly distributes newsletters that offer members the opportunity to be aware of and respond to school issues and activities.

6. To build lasting friendships. PTA events provide a forum to establish long-term friendships with people who have common goals.

Membership Myth-busters

There are four major misconceptions about PTA membership. These falsehoods are preventing Keheley parents from joining an association that helps kids. Well, it’s time to set the record straight!

Myth #1: “Only moms and teachers need to join PTA.”

A strong, vibrant PTA needs the support of moms and dads, step-parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers and school staff, community members, and business leaders. Anyone who cares about children belongs in PTA. It is important that we all have a voice in the decision-making process relating to the laws and regulations – whether in the schools or government - that affect children.

Myth #2: “Joining PTA means I have to volunteer.”

You do not have to volunteer to be a member of PTA! PTA appreciates everyone’s membership, whether or not a member volunteers, because each member increases PTA’s ability to advocate for children.

Myth #3: “PTA membership never expires – I only have to join once.”

Each new school year begins a new PTA membership year. Membership cards are issued to each member who joins PTA as soon as dues are paid. Membership cards are for an annual membership and will remain valid until July 31st of the year indicated on the card.

Myth #4: “I don’t have the time to join PTA.”

We understand your time is valuable. However, it’s your interest in children that counts. If you are not able to support the PTA with time, please become a member and give your financial support so that the children know that you support our efforts. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that your support helps as we develop programs and activities that benefit not only your children, but all children.
